What makes our rugs authentic
Hand-knotted by Moroccan women
More than forty women weavers work with us, in Oued Zem, Khenifra, Marrakech and the Atlas Mountains. Each rug is knotted by hand on an upright loom, one knot at a time.
100% natural sheep's wool, washed
The wool is 100% natural sheep's wool, washed before weaving. It feels soft and dense, and it ages well instead of flattening.
Natural dyes
Colors come from natural dyes. They shift gently from batch to batch, which is part of what makes a handmade rug feel alive.
You see your rug before it ships
Every rug is woven to order in 4–6 weeks. When it is finished, we send you photos to approve before it leaves Morocco.

How to spot a fake Moroccan rug: 7 signs
- 1
Turn it over
On a hand-knotted rug, the pattern shows on the back, knot by knot, with small irregularities. A smooth, latex-coated or perfectly even back points to a machine-made or hand-tufted copy.
- 2
Look at the fringe
On a real Moroccan rug, the fringe is the ends of the warp threads the rug was woven on. A fringe that is sewn or glued onto the edge is a sign of a machine-made rug.
- 3
Expect small imperfections
Lines that lean, motifs that are not quite symmetrical and colors that change slightly are signs of a hand. Perfect repetition is a sign of a machine.
- 4
Feel the wool
Natural wool feels warm, springy and slightly oily to the touch. Synthetic fibers feel slippery, shiny or squeaky, and they flatten quickly.
- 5
Smell it
New wool can smell faintly of sheep, especially when damp, which is normal. A sharp chemical smell suggests synthetic fibers or harsh bleaching.
- 6
Check the words
"Moroccan style", "Beni Ourain inspired" or "Berber look" usually describe a machine-made rug. An honest seller tells you where and how the rug was made.
- 7
Question a price that is too low
A large hand-knotted wool rug takes a weaver weeks of work. An 8×10 "Moroccan" rug for a few hundred dollars is very unlikely to be handmade.
Questions, answered
Are ZenRug rugs authentic Moroccan rugs?
Yes. Every rug is hand-knotted to order in Morocco by women weavers, from 100% natural sheep's wool and natural dyes. None is machine-made, tufted or printed.
Who weaves your rugs?
More than forty women weavers in Oued Zem, Khenifra, Marrakech and the Atlas Mountains. They weave in the traditions of Moroccan Berber (Amazigh) rug making: Beni Ourain, Azilal, Boujad and others.
Why are authentic Moroccan rugs expensive?
A hand-knotted rug takes weeks of skilled work and a large amount of good wool. You are paying for the weaver's time and for a rug that lasts decades, not years.
Can I see my rug before it is shipped?
Yes. When it is finished we send you photos of your rug, and it ships only after you approve them.
