8×10 vs 9×12 Rug: Which Size for Your Living Room?

An 8×10 (244 × 305 cm) and a 9×12 (274 × 366 cm) look close on paper, but the 9×12 is about 35% larger. Here is how to choose between them.

The quick test

Mark the rug's outline on the floor with painter's tape, or lay out sheets of paper. You want the front legs of every seat on the rug and 30–45 cm (12–18 in) of floor between the rug and the walls. If an 8×10 leaves a chair floating off the rug, choose the 9×12.

Choose an 8×10 when

  • Your living room is about 12×15 to 14×18 ft.
  • You have one sofa and one or two chairs.
  • It goes under a queen bed or a dining table for 4 to 6.

Choose a 9×12 when

  • Your living room is about 14×17 ft or larger, or open-plan.
  • You have a sectional, or a sofa and two to four chairs.
  • It goes under a king bed or a dining table for 6 to 8.
