Custom-size rugs: how made-to-order works

Rooms don't come in standard sizes. A hallway is 14 feet long, an alcove is 7 feet wide, a dining table needs a rug just a little larger than an 8 × 10. Because every ZenRug is knotted to order, most of our designs can be woven in the exact size your space needs.

Why a custom size is possible

A hand-knotted rug starts with the warp: the long threads stretched on the loom that every knot is tied around. The width of the warp sets the width of the rug, and the weavers knot until it reaches the length you asked for. The loom is set up for your rug, not the other way round.

How to measure

1. Decide where the rug goes. Our room-by-room size guide shows how much floor a rug should cover in each room.
2. Mark it on the floor with painter's tape. Walk around it, open the doors, pull out the chairs.
3. Measure the taped outline: width and length, in feet or centimeters.
4. Choose your fringes: on both ends, on one end, or none.

How the price works

Every design has one rate per square meter, and a custom rug is priced by its area, like our standard sizes. Our base rate is $160 per m² (about $15 per square foot), with a minimum of $250 per rug. Some designs have a higher rate.

For example, a 7 × 11 ft rug measures about 213 × 335 cm, or 7.1 m². In a design at our base rate, that comes to about $1,140. You'll always get an exact price by email before anything is made, with shipping and import duties included.

From request to delivery, step by step

1. Send us your size. Tell us the design you like, your width and length, your fringe choice and your country. The request form also has space for anything else, like colors or the room it's for.
2. Get your price. We reply by email with an exact price, shipping and duties included. You only pay once you're happy with it.
3. We confirm the size. Before weaving starts, we confirm the final measurements with you by email.
4. Your rug is knotted. Four to eight weeks on the loom, depending on its size.
5. Approve your rug. When it's finished, we email you photos. It ships only after you've seen it.
6. DHL delivers. By DHL Express, usually in about 5 business days, with duties and taxes prepaid and tracking by email.

Good to know before you order

• Cancellations: you can cancel within 24 hours of ordering for a full refund. After that, weaving has started.
• Returns: because a custom rug is made to your measurements, we can't accept returns for a change of mind or a size that no longer fits. Please double-check your measurements.
• If something is wrong: if your rug arrives damaged, is the wrong rug or size, or is not as described, we replace it or refund you in full.
• Natural variation: small differences in color, pattern and size are part of a hand-knotted rug, and not defects.
